GIJON, Spain — Barcelona boutique distributor Baditri Films has taken a trio of pics for Spain: “Il ne faut jurer…de rien! (Never Say Never!), “Tara Road” and “Belle toujours.”
Sold by France’s Roissy Films, “Never” stars Gerard Jugnot in a period sex farce adapting an 1836 play by Alfred de Musset. Directed by Gillies MacKinnon, “Tara Road” toplines Andie MacDowell and Olivia Williams as an American and an Irish woman who house-swap. A loose sequel to Luis Bunuel’s celebrated “Belle de jour,” reprising two of its central characters 39 years on, “Belle toujours” was directed by 98-year-old Portuguese helmer Manoel de Oliveira.
Launched in April 2005 by Antoni Badimon, former deputy general manager of Lauren Films, Baditri aims to acquire around half-a-dozen films a year for Spain.
“There is a market for smaller titles in Spain, but it requires an enormous amount of work to nurse them and Spain lacks arthouses in many cities, limiting exhibition opportunities,” Badimon said at Spain’s Gijon Film Festival. “Never!” will open in Spain Dec. 22.
