‘Apples’ juices Kolkata film fest

Event will showcase 225 films from 53 countries

The 12th Kolkata Film Festival opened Friday with Danish helmer Andres Thomas Jensen’s “Adam’s Apples.”

Weeklong fest, in the eastern Indian city of Kolkata, West Bengal, will showcase 225 films from 53 countries. It includes a retrospective of Ingmar Bergman films and will pay tribute to Italians helmers Luchino Visconti and Roberto Rossellini.

Also unspooling are films by Czech filmmaker Jan Nemec, Chile’s Miguel Littin, Italy’s Nanni Moretti and Japan’s Shohei Imamura.

The fest will screen Indian films in Assamese, Bengali, Kannada, Malayalam, Marathi and Tamil languages.
