Japanese production house AMG, headed by prexy/CEO Akifumi Sugihara, has boarded Joao Jardim’s upcoming docu, “Guardians of the Samba” as a co-production partner. Production companies include Brazil’s Total Entertainment and Boca a Boca Filmes, Portugal’s Fado Filmes and Gloria Films in France.
Pic is produced by Total’s Iafa Britz and Boca’s Eric Belhassen.
Shooting in August and September, the feature-length documentary profiles revered samba masters who maintain the genre’s musical heritage, such as singer Walter Alfaiate, Dona Ivone Lara, Brazil’s first femme samba composer, and singer-composer Nelson Sargent. It climaxes in a live performance, and also describes their relationships with samba schools.
Run by Britz, Walkiria Barbosa and Vilma Lustosa, Total Ent. is one of Brazil’s most active film and TV producers, whose films have sometimes made huge hauls in Brazil. “If I Were You” sold 3.7 million tix, “Sex, Love and Betrayal” sold 2.3 million.
Total is moving forward on a raft of projects, including Carlos Saura’s “Amor de Dios,” a fiction film set around rehearsal’s for a Brazilian musical, and a Brazilian remake of a Chilean B.O. smash hit, saucy comedy “Sex With Love.”
