Helmer Matthew Bonifacio’s short “The Watering Hole” took the top prize over the weekend at Tropfest@Tribeca. Pic beat out seven other in-competish shorts.
Event is a partnership between the Tribeca Film Festival and helmer John Polson’s Oz-based short film festival Tropfest. All entries were required to clock in at less than seven minutes and incorporate a manhole cover as a “signature item.”
Winning pic follows the story of a young girl whose father is in a downward spiral of depression and alcoholism after his wife’s death. Helmer’s previous credits include the Sundance entry “Lbs.”
Jury for Tropfest@Tribeca included Darren Aronofsky, Caroline Baron, Matt Dillon, Famke Janssen, Anthony LaPaglia, Charles Randolph and Naomi Watts. Funnyman Ed Helms hosted the event, held at the Tribeca Drive In at the World Financial Center.
Bonifacio won $2,500 in cash plus editing software from Apple.
