Venice jury in the works

Mexican helmer Guillermo del Toro, who has fantasy “Pan’s Labyrinth” in the Cannes competish, Italo thesp Stefania Rocca and Iran’s Mohsen Makhmalbaf will round out the Venice Film Festival’s Luigi De Laurentiis first-works jury which, as previously announced, is headed by U.S. producer Paula Wagner.

“This exceptionally high-profile jury stands as an indication that we are making special efforts to unearth a treasure trove of new young directors,” Venice artistic topper Marco Muller said.

In a show of reconciliation with the nascent Rome Film Fest, presser was attended by Rome event’s Mario Sesti. The rival events will collaborate on film restoration projects, while competing for official selection pics.

The Lido’s first-works prize, also known as Lion of the future, is worth E100,00 ($125,000). The fest runs Aug. 30-Sept. 9.
