Vancouver into the ‘Mystic’

Auds fete 'Ball' most popular pic at fest

VANCOUVER — Auds at the 25th Vancouver Film Festival voted helmer Greg Hamilton’s docu “Mystic Ball,” about Myanmar’s obscure sport chinlone, as the most popular Canadian feature. Florian Henckel von Donnermarck’s East German political thriller “Das leben der anderen/Lives of Others” was voted the most popular foreign film at the fest, which wrapped Friday.

Juried awards went to American helmer Connie Field for the doc “Have You Heard From Johannesburg?” about the defeat of apartheid in South Africa, and to Filipino helmer John Torres for his debut feature “Todo todo teros,” a tale about boho life in Manila that won the Dragons & Tigers Award for Young Cinema.

Paul Fox won the C$12,000 ($10,200) Citytv Western Canada feature film award for the B.C.-centric comedy “Everything’s Gone Green,” scripted by Vancouver-based Gen-X novelist Douglas Coupland.

More than 300 films were screened during the fest’s 16-day run. There were 104 Canadian films, including 30 features, with half of the Canuck titles coming from British Columbia production companies.

Although the low-key fest continues to be slanted more to local filmgoers than to B.C.’s booming film industry, the associated four-day VIFF Film and Television Forum continued to grow, adding a 5 p.m. “industry hour” for networking at the fest’s new Vancouver Intl. Film Center.
