Universal has set Jason Segel, who stars in the CBS sitcom “How I Met Your Mother,” to pen “Forgetting Sarah Marshall,” a comedy he’ll also star in.
Judd Apatow will produce the project, which was sold as a pitch by Segel.
Apatow has also cast Segel in his next feature comedy, “Knocked Up.” The two forged a relationship working on the series “Freaks and Geeks” and “Undeclared.”
Segel said Apatow has mentored his writing career, encouraging him to hang around the writers room on his series. Segel responded by writing “Nightmares Beware,” a spec script that sold to Columbia and producer Lorenzo di Bonaventura. He’ll write the new project immediately, then do “Knocked Up” and return to his CBS sitcom in August.
“The comedy is an amalgam of some of the bad relationships and breakups I’ve had in my life,” Segel said. “It takes place in Hawaii, and it is hell in paradise.”
