Tots cheer Ocelot toon

Helmer screens 'Azur' at Directors Fortnight

Cannes is a small world after all — or at least it was at Sunday’s Directors Fortnight screening of Gallic helmer Michel Ocelot’s animated “Azur and Asmar,” attended by about 200 tiny and not-so-tiny tots. After the movie the young invitees, chowing down on sandwiches and cakes, got the opportunity to question Ocelot about the pic.

The director of Gallic box office hit “Kirikou and the Sorceress” was obviously moved and misty-eyed at the standing ovation from his young fans, and had to take a few breaths before jumping into the melee.

The e10 million ($12.7 million) pic follows the adventures of two childhood friends — one light-skinned, one dark — in medieval Maghreb in Africa.

Highlighting the importance of pic’s treatment of racial and class issues to the director, Ocelot and production shingle Nord-Ouest chose invitees from regional assistance orgs.
