Distrib's big summer pic will be 'Saiyuki'
PUSAN — Japanese major Toho has unveiled its lineup through the summer of 2007, including six new titles.
The most familiar is probably “Tsubaki Sanjuro,” Yoshimitsu Morita’s take on Akira Kurosawa’s classic samurai actioner. Yuji Oda (“Bayside Shakedown 2”) stars.
Toho has not yet set a release date.
Toho’s big summer pic will be “Saiyuki,” an actioner based on the classic Chinese tale that also inspired the hit toon “Dragonball.” Shingo Katori reprises his role on Fuji TV’s hit series as a monkey who travels from China to India with a Buddhist priest (Eri Fukatsu) and other animal companions.
Also bowing next summer is “Maiko Haaaan!!!” a comedy about an apprentice-geisha-turned-baseball-player tarring Kou Shibasaki (“The Sinking of Japan”). The helmer is Nobuo Mizuta and the scripter is Kankuro Kudo. Toho has skedded a June 16 release.
Also added to the line-up are the new “Doraemon” toon (release: March 10), “Unfair — The Movie,” a hard-boiled cop pic starring Kyoko Shinohara and Yosuke Eguchi (March) and “Bizan,” a mother-daughter drama helmed by Isshin Inudo (“Maison de Himiko”) and starring Nanako Matsushima (“Ring”) and Takao Ozawa (“Crying Out Love, In the Center of the World”) (release: May 12).
