Tartan votes for ‘Election’

Co. buys U.S. distrib rights to H.K. thriller franchise

Tartan USA has bought U.S. distrib rights to Hong Kong helmer Johnnie To’s “Election” and “Election 2.” Thrillers played in official selection at Cannes in 2005 and 2006, respectively.

Franchise revolves around the tough underworld of Hong Kong gangsters.

Tartan USA acquired the distrib rights from Celluloid Dreams in a deal brokered by Tartan USA acquisitions consultant Marie-Therese Guirgis and Celluloid’s Charlotte Mickie.

Tartan USA had a busy 2006 fest, picking up U.S. distrib rights to a handful of films, including British drama “Red Road,” which won the jury prize.
