A tribute to Sean Connery — one of several events to feature the thesp — will kick off the first RomeFilmFest on Oct. 13.
He will receive the inaugural acting award at a gala in the Sala Sinopoli at the Italo capital’s Auditorium Parco della Musica; event will include an onstage interview.
Connery, who also will receive a prize from the city of Rome, will introduce a retro of 14 titles showcasing his work in sidebar the Actor’s Craft.
With lineup chosen by Connery, sidebar will open with Alfred Hitchcock’s “Marnie” and include just one James Bond pic, “From Russia With Love.”
“Sean Connery is a great actor who has been capable of crossing over several genres,” said Rome Mayor Walter Veltroni at a press conference Wednesday. “This combination of quality and popularity is an inspiration for our event, which is more of a festa (party) than a festival.”
Nine-day event, which aims to lure local audiences and international buyers, also announced its collaboration with New York’s Tribeca Film Festival. Tribeca founder Robert De Niro will be in Rome for the fest, said Tribeca topper Peter Scarlet, who was present at the Rome presser.
The two fests will choose films by young European helmers to preem at Rome before going on to unspool at Tribeca, while a selection of Tribeca pics will unspool in Rome.
Lineup of the Rome fest, which has a 14-pic competition, gala section Premiere, cutting-edge section Extra and a kidpic section, will be announced in late September.
Variety is the festival’s international media partner.
