For years Romanian filmmakers have been providing cheap production services to U.S. and Western European producers.
Now Bucharest-based MediaPro Studios, who with Castel Films are the main services providers, is using the coin and experience gained from production servicing to move into co-financing. It has also set up a distribution arm.
“California Dreaming” is MediaPro’s first self-financed production, targeting local and international markets. It’s the feature debut of helmer Cristian Nemescu, whose short “Marilena From P7” is screening in Critics Week.
” ‘California Dreaming’ is a dark comedy about American soldiers lost in translation in the Romanian wilderness and a Romanian girl lost in the American dream,” explains MediaPro topper and the pic’s producer Andrei Boncea. “It’s fully funded by us and by Romanian subsidies.”
The Romanian-English lingo laffer is sold by Intandem; principal photography is set to start in July.
In addition to “California Dreaming” MediaPro Pictures also has “Ku” in development with Storm Entertainment and Chris Milburn’s Midsummer Films.
Milburn produced “An American Haunting” at the MediaPro Studios and also is a co-producer on “California Dreaming.”
“Our studio is ready now not only to provide quality production services at best costs, but also to initiate and co-finance international productions,” he added.
