‘Quinceanera’ opens Morelia fest

13 docus, 56 shorts will compete at event

MEXICO CITY — The fourth Morelia Intl. Film Festival will open Oct. 14 with Wash Westmoreland and Richard Glatzer’s Sundance fave “Quinceanera” and close Oct. 22 with Michel Gondry’s “The Science of Sleep.”

Competition at Morelia, Mexico’s second-most important fest behind Guadalajara, includes 13 docus and 56 shorts.

Helmer Guillermo del Toro will present the Mexican premiere of “Pan’s Labyrinth,” which is Mexico’s entry for the foreign-language Oscar nomination.

Five features will preem: Altavista’s production of Daniel Gruener’s “Morise en Domingo”; Lemon Film’s horror pic “KM 31,” helmed by Rigoberto Castaneda; Arturo Ripstein’s “El carnaval de sodoma”; Tere Suarez’s “Asi del Precipicio”; and “Erendia la indomable,” helmed by Juan Mora Catlett.

Guests of honor will include British helmer Mike Hodges and French helmer Jean-Claude Carriere.

Fest, directed by Daniela Michel since its founding, is sponsored by Cinepolis, Mexico’s biggest exhib.
