'Religion' heads for bigscreen
A variation on L.A. and New York stage hit “Jewtopia” is going into development as a film project, with producer Tucker Tooley optioning a screenplay from the show’s creators.
Tooley has bought “Chris O’Connell and Adam Lipschitz Lose Their Religion” from “Jewtopia” creators Bryan Fogel and Sam Wolfson. Duo based the script loosely on their play, which has run for several years Off Broadway after a successful run in Los Angeles.
Pair, who have starred in both Gotham and L.A. stage versions, will take the two lead roles in the film version. Other early collaborators are also aboard; helmer Andy Fickman (“She’s the Man”), who directed the initial L.A. staging of “Jewtopia,” will exec produce. Dan Weston will also produce.
Show is a comic look at two men, a Jew and a non-Jew, each looking to date outside his religion. Wolfson and Fogel developed it from their comedy routine; project also has spawned a book.
Tooley previously exec produced “Shadowboxer” and produced “A Man Apart.”
