Pix venturing to Venice

'Flute,' 'Inland' set for fest

With seven weeks to go before the Venice Film Festival lineup is announced on July 31, the Lido slate is beginning to take shape.

Kenneth Branagh’s “The Magic Flute” has already been confirmed, along with David Lynch’s mystery “Inland Empire,” which will screen out of competition. Latter pic, produced by Gaul’s StudioCanal, stars Laura Dern, Jeremy Irons and Harry Dean Stanton.

Others pics strongly tipped for a Lido launch include Woody Allen’s comedy “Scoop,” Gianni Amelio’s China-set “The Missing Star” and Brian De Palma’s noir adaptation of author James Ellroy’s “The Black Dahlia.”

Fest director Marco Muller has said the accent this year will be on Europe, as underscored by his selection of French actress Catherine Deneuve to head the main jury.

But a Eurocentric bent does not rule out a strong U.S. crop, expected to include Irwin Winkler’s Iraq coming home drama “Home of the Brave,” Oliver Stone’s “World Trade Center” and Alfonso Cuaron’s sci-fi thriller “Children of Men.”

Italian entries tipped include Emanuele Crialese’s Ellis Island drama “The Golden Door” and Ermanno Olmi’s “I cento chiodi.”

Among likely Gallic entries are Alain Resnais’ “Petites peurs partagees” and Otar Iosseliani’s “Jardins en automne.”

Muller is in Hong Kong scouting Asian fare.

Lynch will receive the fest’s Golden Lion for lifetime achievement, although he has not formally accepted the fest’s invitation. Also at the fest, tribute will be paid to Roberto Rossellini’s centennial with unspoolings of the freshly restored classics “Rome Open City” and “General Della Rovere.” Latter screening will be of the original uncut version, which won the 1959 Golden Lion.

The Venice fest will run Aug. 30-Sept. 9.
