The 18th edition of the Palm Springs Film Fest will award its first annual Patron of the Arts honor to Sydney Pollack, who is involved in three films this year.
Kate Winslet will receive the Desert Palm Achievement Award, while Todd Field has been selected for the Sonny Bono Visionary Award. Winslet stars in New Line’s “Little Children,” directed by Field.
The three will receive their honors at fest’s awards gala on Jan. 6 at the Palm Springs Convention Center.
Festival chairman Earl Greenburg made the announcement Monday at a Manhattan event hosted by Gotham Magazine.
Pollack’s Patron award, sponsored by the Screen Actors Guild Foundation, is given to a person who has contributed significantly to the support of persons or projects that encourage and recognize the commitment to excellence in the film industry. This year, Pollack has a role in France’s foreign language Oscar submission “Avenue Montaigne,” produced Anthony Minghella’s “Breaking and Entering” and was exec producer of “Catch a Fire.”
Fest, which runs Jan. 4-15, will screen more than 30 films from 65 countries.
