Overseas buyers spy Beta’s ‘Lives’

Co. sells East German espionage pic to several territories

BERLIN — Beta Cinema has reported brisk business at the Cannes Film Market, particularly for East German spy drama “The Lives of Others.”

Company added market screenings due to interest in the film, a chilling portrait of the East German Stasi’s domestic spying program and the impact it has on a playwright and his wife.

Pic has sold to Sandrew Metronome for Scandinavia; ABC/Ciniemien for Benelux; Prooptiki for Greece, Cyprus, Bulgaria and Romania; Alfa Filmes for Argentina, Paraguay, Chile and Uruguay; and Europa Filmes for Brazil.

Company also has sold Un Certain Regard screener “Salvador” to Europa Filmes and WWII drama “Dresden — The Inferno” to Limon in Turkey and Bonton Film for the Czech Republic and Slovakia.

Meanwhile, Media Luna Entertainment has sold Fredi Murer’s Swiss drama “Vitus,” starring Bruno Ganz, to China’s Hansion Media and sold Russian gay drama “You, I Love” from Olga Stolpovskaja and Dmitry Troitsky, to Singapore’s Overseas Movie Distributions.
