NBC Universal nets cable sales

'Break-Up,' 'Miami Vice,' 'Inside Man' included in USA package

NBC Universal will pocket close to $60 million on the sale of a batch of theatricals to cable, led by USA’s pickup of “The Break-Up,” “Inside Man” and “Miami Vice” and TNT/TBS’ purchase of “You, Me and Dupree” and “The Fast and the Furious: Tokyo Drift.”

The movies didn’t rack up instant sales as none were blockbuster hits in the theaters. Only one cracked the $100 million threshold in domestic gross: “The Break-Up,” with $118.7 million.

NBC U will fetch the biggest price for “Break-Up,” about $15 million, because the movie will play both on USA, which gets the first batch of runs, and on Lifetime, which has bought some plays following the USA premiere early in 2009. NBC U also reserves the right to sell a run of “Break-Up” to a broadcast net after USA’s debut.

The option of a broadcast run also holds for the other major titles, which premiere on USA and TNT/TBS in late 2008/early 2009, after their first 18-month pay TV window on HBO, which has an output deal for Universal theatricals.

In addition to “Break-Up,” “Inside Man” and “Miami Vice,” USA has also bought the 2004 U title “Dawn of the Dead.”

TBS has a four-year deal for “Dupree” (available in January 2009), and its TNT sibling has a similar contract for “Tokyo Drift” (available in November 2008). TBS has also bought the straight-to-video “American Pie 5: The Naked Mile” for a June 2007 airdate.

NBC U has sold cable rights to Woody Allen’s “Scoop” to Oxygen, which will also get some post-TBS runs of “Dupree” and some post-USA runs of the 2005 Kate Hudson thriller “The Skeleton Key.”
