Mosaic takes action with Chasman pact

Media group leaps into action

Mosaic Media Group has expanded into action fare by bringing manager-producer Steve Chasman and his company, Current Entertainment, into the fold.

Chasman will join with Mosaic’s Atlas Entertainment to form ACE Media.

Mosaic consists of several pieces that include Charles Roven’s Atlas (which produces films like “Get Smart” and “Batman Returns”) and the management and producing businesses of Eric Gold and Jimmy Miller. Mosaic also partners with Mandalay in Dick Clark Prods., with Mosaic’s Allen Shapiro running a company that produces the Golden Globes, the American Music Awards and other perennials.

As producer-manager, Chasman created a niche with offshore-flavored action fare that introduced stars like Jet Li and Jason Statham to U.S. audiences. Aside from Li and Statham, Chasman’s management roster includes Leelee Sobieski, Tcheky Karyo, Corey Yuen, Shu Qui and Tony Ching.

As a producer, Chasman is in post-production on “Rogue,” the Lionsgate film that stars Li and Statham, and the Yuen-directed “DOA: Dead or Alive,” which Dimension Films opens Dec. 8. Chasman has produced such Statham starrers as “Chaos” and “The Transporter” and Li starrers “The One,” “Unleashed” and “Kiss of the Dragon.”

Chasman will continue setting up those kinds of films under the Mosaic umbrella, and he will partner with Roven and Alex Gartner on certain films projects generated by Atlas.

“Steve has cornered the action market, both through the clients he manages and films he has produced, and he has shown a keen eye for what audiences want,” Roven said. “His client base is a perfect compliment to the existing clients of Gold and Miller.”

Chasman said he was attracted by the opportunity “to partner with Charles on projects, while building a specialty management team focusing on a very specific grouping of actors, writers and filmmakers.”
