ROME — The Mediterranean island of Malta will host its first international film festival Sept. 15-23 as it looks to attract foreign productions while shining a spotlight on filmmakers from the Mideast, North Africa and Europe.
Fest director Hisham Abdel Khalek has selected 50 films including two Egyptian pics: “Yacobian Bulding,” directed by Marwan Hamed, and the Khaled El Hagar-helmed “None but That!”
MIFF, which hopes to attract 400 film buffs and industry execs, will bow amid a crowded fest calendar on the heels of Venice and Toronto.
The event is organized by Paris-based European Orient Cultural Exchange Assn., the Maltese Ministry of Tourism and Culture, Egypt’s AraMage Artistic Prods. and Maltese management company AJR Events.
No budget was announced for the event.
