Bill Maher is teaming with “A Scanner Darkly” producers Palmer West and Jonah Smith on docu “A Spiritual Journey,” Maher’s take on the current state of world religion.
West and Smith are producing pic via their Thousand Words banner, and Maher will serve as a producer.
Creators describe the docu as “examining the presence of religion in many of the big news stories of recent years, from Muslim riots over cartoons to the Ten Commandments in front of courthouses, a born-again Christian in the White House and Scientology in the birthing room.”
Maher will interview various religious figures in order to question his own skepticism on the topic. The comedian has openly poked fun at organized religion as a cornerstone of his standup routines, and also on his “Real Time With Bill Maher” and “Politically Incorrect” skeins.
“The whole problem with the world is that fools and fanatics are always so sure of themselves, but wiser people are full of doubt,” Maher quipped, citing Bertrand Russell.
Pic doesn’t yet have a director; aim is to begin production later this year.
