‘King’ rules Vantage

Teen novel set up at Gary Sanchez

Paramount Vantage has scooped up film rights to Frank Portman’s debut novel, “King Dork,” for Will Ferrell and Adam McKay’s Gary Sanchez Prods. to produce.

Recently formed shingle has a two-year, first-look deal with Vantage to turn out laffers.

“King Dork” marks the second project Vantage has set up with Gary Sanchez to produce after “Stepfather.” Ferrell and McKay also persuaded Vantage to acquire “Foot Fist Way” out of the Los Angeles Film Fest.

A satirical comedy, Portman’s young-adult tome follows the adventures of a teen loser whose life changes when he reads his father’s copy of “The Catcher in the Rye.” The boy suddenly finds himself at the center of several mysteries that he must solve, including his father’s death.

Book, published by Random House imprint Delacorte in April, has been nominated for a Quill Award.

A longtime punk rock musician with Oakland’s the Mr. T. Experience, Portman is working on his second novel for Delacorte.

Vantage production and acquisition topper Amy Israel said Portman’s novel “captures the sort of insecurities all kids feel growing up. His use of the detective element makes this one of the most unique pieces of teen fiction to come out in the last several years.”

Producers are Ferrell and McKay, with Chris Henchy shepherding for Gary Sanchez. Henchy joined the shingle in August.
