Hot Docs to honor helmer Herzog

Canuck fest to present retrospective of director's work

Director Werner Herzog will receive the achievement award at the 13th Hot Docs Canadian Documentary Festival, North America’s largest doc fest, which takes place April 28 to May 7.

Festgoers can also see the helmer in person at “An Evening With Werner Herzog.”

Hot Docs and the Toronto Film Festival Group’s Cinematheque Ontario will co-present retrospectives of Herzog’s documentary and fiction films. He has produced, written and directed more than 40 films over four decades including “Land of Silence and Darkness” (1971), “My Best Fiend” (1999) and “Grizzly Man”(2005).

Quebecois filmmaker Serge Giguere will be the subject of this year’s Focus On … program, a look at a mid-career filmmaker. Giguere’s films include “Oscar Thiffault” (1987) and “Le roi du drum” (The King of Drums, 1991).

Helmer-scribe Hubert Davis (“Hardwood”) has joined Hot Docs as a guest programmer for 2006.
