LONDON — Genius Products, the Santa Monica-based homevid outfit primarily owned by the Weinstein Co., has picked up North American rights to “Dirty Sanchez: The Movie,” dubbed the Welsh version of “Jackass.”
Pic, produced by Vertigo Films and MTV Films Europe, was released theatrically Sept. 22 by Pathe in Blighty to some of the worst reviews for a British film this year, along with a handful of more positive notices.
Nonetheless, it has grossed a respectable $1.2 million, which is more than the production budget, and is likely to perform strongly on DVD.
The movie is a spinoff from the MTV Europe show about four lads in Wales who perform ridiculous, dangerous and often obscene stunts.
The most notorious scene in the movie shows one of them having liposuction without anesthetic, followed by another drinking the fluids extracted from his friend’s body.
The deal with Genius was struck by Pathe Pictures Intl., which is handling worldwide sales.
