Filmax raises coin for slate

Studio bags $25 mil thru Barclays

Barcelona mini-major Filmax Entertainment has raised $25 million via a seven-year bond issue managed by Barclays Capital, the investment banking division of U.K.-based financial services group Barclays.

Coin will bankroll Filmax’s slate, which ranges from international co-productions — Tom Tykwer’s “Perfume” and Brad Anderson’s upcoming “TransSiberian” — to toons housed under Filmax Animation, such as “The Hairy Tooth Fairy.”

Filmax is also hiking its TV production, led by six TV movies, “6 Films to Keep You Awake.”

The bond issue is a rare case of U.S. funding for a non-listed Spanish film company.

Filmax has already been successful in courting blue-chip Spanish financial institutions and companies.

In December, Filmax pulled down a syndicated loan for $75.1 million arranged by Ahorro Corp., and underwritten by Spanish savings banks plus Fortis Bank and Catalan state finance arm, the Catalan Finance Institute.
