Miramax Films has snapped up North American distribution rights to offbeat New Zealand comedy “Eagle vs. Shark.”

Pic, now in post-production, was written and helmed by Taika Waititi in his feature directorial debut. Waititi received an Academy Award nom in 2004 for his short “Two Cars, One Night,” and a special jury prize at the Berlin Film Festival for short “Tama tu” last year.

Eagle vs. Shark” revolves around two awkward misfits struggling for acceptance. Pic stars New Zealanders Loren Horsley and Jemaine Clement, who recently starred in the HBO comedy special “One Night Stands 59: Flight of the Conchords.”

Waititi developed the film while at the Sundance Institute’s Directors and Screenwriters Lab.

Producers are Ainsley Gardiner and Cliff Curtis of Whenua Films.

Miramax bought the distrib rights off a five-minute reel, with several other U.S. studio specialty arms also eying the project. Project was Miramax’s sole Cannes buy.
