Documentaries capture coin

15 docu projects awarded cash prizes

PUSAN — The Pusan Intl. Film Festival is emerging as an enthusiastic sponsor of documentaries with the expansion of its Asian Network of Documentary Fund.

In a ceremony on Friday night at the Paradise Hotel, 15 documentary projects, ten more than last year, were each presented with cash awards ranging from $5,000 to $10,000, for a total of $130,000. Recipients, many of whom have won awards for their past work, hailed from China, Iran, India, Singapore, Japan, South Korea and the Philippines.

The AND is also promoting networking and co-operation among Asian documentary filmmakers by arranging on- and off-line networking and lobbying for new distribution windows for Asian documentaries.

The org was launched in 2003 with a $10,000 grant from Youngsan Univ. to support a Korean documentary.

This year’s sponsors range from Korean universities, banks and companies to the Overseas Korean Foundation.
