Mexican prod'n arm starts work on first feature

Columbia Films Producciones Mexico, Sony Pictures’ local production entity in Mexico, has begun production on its first feature, “Charm School” (Ninas Mal), to be produced and directed by Fernando Sarinana.

Pic was written by Issa Lopez and is based on an idea and story treatment by Sony Pictures Releasing Intl. executive VPs of creative Ignacio Darnaude and Jose Balido.

The cast includes Martha Higareda, Camila Sodi and Blanca Guerra.

Principal photography is taking place in Mexico City.

“Charm School” is about rebellious 18-year-old Adela (Higareda), who is enrolled in Mexico City’s only remaining charm school for ladies so she won’t spoil her father’s chances of becoming the next governor of the city. Pic follows the battle of wills between Adela and the head of the school.

International distribution of pics from Columbia Pictures Producciones Mexico will be handled by Sony Pictures Releasing International.

The mandate of Sony’s Mexican production entity is to develop new projects as well as continue to invest in and acquire local product. Previous local acquisitions in Mexico include “El Crimen del Padre Amaro.”

Sony also has local-language production entities in East Asia, France, Italy, Spain, Brazil and, most recently, India and Russia.
