CANNES — Celluloid Dreams is handling international sales on the feature debut of “American Beauty” scribe Alan Ball.
As yet untitled pic, with a start date of Aug. 9, will be produced by Ted Hope for New York production shingle This is That, with Steven Rales’ Collage Cinematographie and in association with Scott Rudin Prods.
This is That’s Anne Carey and Anthony Bregman will executive produce with Rudin.
Story is about the daughter of a Lebanese-American man and an American woman who comes of age during the Gulf War in the early 1990s.
“Alan is dealing with sexual, political and social topics that are taboo, but every detail is so well-observed, every moment is so nuanced and every single character treated with such compassion that taboos are transcended,” said Celluloid prexy Hengameh Panahi. “The script is clearly from the hand that created ‘American Beauty’ and ‘Six Feet Under.’ ”
Deal was brokered by UTA who will handle North American rights.
