‘Bickford’ hit by Lightning

Company scores sales rights to Weitz brothers' laffer

Lightning Entertainment has acquired international sales rights to college comedy “Bickford Shmeckler’s Cool Ideas,” produced by Vulcan Prods. and the Weitz brothers.

“Bickford,” helmed and written by Scott Lew, stars Patrick Fugit, Matthew Lillard, Cheryl Hines, Olivia Wilde and John Cho.

Producers are Chris and Paul Weitz with Vulcan’s Michael Caldwell, Richard Hutton, Andrew Miano, Jeremiah Samuels and Lloyd Segan.

Story centers on a young man whose book of “cool ideas” is stolen by a hedonistic woman, forcing the title character to get “outside of himself” to get it back.

The producers and financiers will donate part of the gross receipts before recoupment to charities combating Lou Gehrig’s disease. Lew was diagnosed with the disease while the film was in development.

Lightning Entertainment is introducing the film to foreign buyers at the American Film Market.
