‘Bell’ tolling for U

Kosar to pen Witherspoon scare tale

Scott Kosar, who scripted genre hits “The Texas Chainsaw Massacre” and “The Amityville Horror,” has been tapped by Universal and Reese Witherspoon’s Type A banner to write “Bell Witch.”

Project is being fashioned as a star vehicle for Witherspoon, whose company got involved when U bought the Don Winston spec “Our Family Troubles” (Daily Variety, Dec. 16).

Story follows a new mom so haunted by unexplained phenomena that she doubts her sanity. She fixates on the legend of the Bell Witch and becomes convinced that an evil spirit is out to harm her baby.

Witherspoon is producing with Type A Films partner Jennifer Simpson.

Kosar, whose credits include Christian Bale starrer “The Machinist,” is also working on a remake of George Romero pic “The Crazies.”
