Weinsteins go wild over ‘Meerkats’ docu

TWC nabs world rights to wildlife pic

The Weinstein Co. continues to diversify its slate, announcing Tuesday that it will co-finance wildlife docu “Meerkats” with BBC Films.

As part of the deal, TWC will take all world rights except British television, which will be controlled by the BBC. Foreign rights will be peddled by the Weinstein Co. at AFM.

Similar to Animal Planet’s series “Meerkat Manor,” the Weinstein doc concerns the lives of meerkats in the Kalahari, teasing out parallels to the lives of humans. Lensing will begin in November in Africa.

BBC Films will produce with the BBC Natural History Unit, which until now has focused on nature-oriented television skeins. Duo have never worked together on a feature.

James Honeyborne, who previously helmed National Geographic-produced TV docu “Earth Ride,” is attached to direct.

The Weinstein Co. will deploy its juiced-up international sales division at AFM, shopping pics such as “The Brothers Bloom,” “Clock Tower” and “Make It Happen.”
