Division gets int'l rights to 'Wordplay'
NEW YORK — The Weinstein Co. has snapped up all international rights to “Wordplay,” the crossword puzzle docu directed by Patrick Creadon and screening at the Tribeca Film Festival.
TWC will offer “Wordplay” in Cannes via its international division, headed by Glen Basner.
IFC Films is distributing “Wordplay” domestically after grabbing the rights at Sundance.
Pic takes a look at New York Times crossword editor-NPR regular Will Shortz and the national tournament he founded.
Bill Clinton, Jon Stewart, Bob Dole, Ken Burns and rockers the Indigo Girls all make appearances.
Christine O’Malley produced the pic, and Cinetic Media repped its rights.
In other Tribeca news, Hungarian distrib Best Hollywood picked up rights to the docu “Freedom’s Fury.”
Pic was exec produced by Lucy Liu, Amy Sommer, Quentin Tarantino and Andrew Vajna and follows a heavily politicized water polo match between Hungary and the Soviet Union at the 1956 Melbourne Olympics.
Colin Keith Gray and Megan Raney Aarons helmed the pic.
