U locks up ‘Prison’ rights

No date set for Odenkirk laffer

Universal has picked up North American distribution for buddy comedy “You Are Going to Prison” from Carsey-Werner Films.

U is planning a release for “Prison,” which stars Dax Shepard, Will Arnett and Chi McBride, later this year but hasn’t set a date. Studio’s handling the pic via a “rent-a-system” deal under which it will recoup marketing costs plus a distribution fee.

Bob Odenkirk directed the tale of a career criminal and an entitled rich man stuck together in a maximum-security prison cell. Team of Robert Ben Garant and Thomas Lennon penned the script along with Michael Patrick Jann.

CW Films financed the project, which had been in development by Strike Entertainment principal Marc Abraham for seven years after Paul Young optioned the rights to James Hogshire’s irreverent how-to book about avoiding prison and minimizing the problems if incarcerated.

Abraham, Young and CW Films prexy Matt Berenson produced. Marcy Carsey, Tom Werner, Caryn Mandabach and Armyan Bernstein exec produced.
