1980: Stars mobilized for possible hostilities

From the Army Archerd Archive

May 5, 1980

If hostilities were to break out, Hollywood film units like the WWII Frank Capra and George Stevens groups would be organized with Glenn Ford, Capt. USN-Retired. He is already in confabs with the chief of Naval Operations … Jackie Cooper, Capt. USNR, public affairs, says he has not yet been apprised of any switch to active status. He’s been flying the F-14 simulator and will soon take off in one. Meanwhile, Cooper’s working on post-production of CBS’ “Rodeo Girl” which he directed. Ford , celebrating his birthday (64th) at Dan Tana’s, said he’s readying to wing to Australia to star in a contemporary western-comedy, “Saddle Sore and Blue.” (2006 update: The “hostilities” referred to in my column of 1980 revolved around the taking of American hostages in Iran. I spoke with Cooper, 83, who recalled making many informational stops for the Navy in Hawaii, Panama, the Mediterranean. Cooper enjoys his longtime retirement from the biz. The theme of his CBS movie from 26 years ago apparently holds up: Daily Variety reported Wednesday that Jerry Weintraub will produce the feature “Rodeo Gal” by Katie Wech and starring Emma Roberts at WB. For an update on Ford and my visit with him this week to celebrate his 90th birthday, log on to www.armyarcherd.com. In that same May 5, 1980, column, I noted, Larry Hagman, “Dallas'” J.R. Ewing, was named “The year’s most compelling male in Britain’s TV Times poll.” Today, John Travolta is sought to play “J.R.” in the feature version of “Dallas.”)
