'Stranger' calling on Oscar contenders for B.O. brawl

This year’s best pic noms — which currently range between $15 million and $55 million at the domestic B.O. — are hoping history repeats itself: Most of last year’s middle-grossing contenders reaped significant gains by Oscar night. Among wide openers this weekend is Sony’s “When a Stranger Calls.”
