WB has become the first foreign distrib to launch a Japanese film at No. 1 in Japan.
“Death Note” opened June 17, displacing “The Da Vinci Code,” with a two-day weekend total of ¥409 million ($3.54 million).
Pic is the first in a two-parter based on a Japanese comicbook of the same name. WB will release the second part, “Death Note: The Last Name,” in November.
The previous record for a Japanese film released by a Hollywood distrib was Sony’s “Ultraman Tiga,” which grossed just over $1 million in its opening weekend in 2000.
