SEOUL — Debut helmer Son Jae-gon’s “My Scary Girl,” a low-budget comedy shot in HD, is wowing the South Korean box office.
Pic is a co-production between Sidus FNH and broadcaster MBC, with a modest $950,000 budget before P&A.
It opened on 290 prints thanks to strong word of mouth in advance screenings, and earned $13.9 million after three weeks on top of the box office and a week at No. 4, beating “Ice Age 2” in weeks three and four.
Pic is about a 30-year-old man thrilled to be dating a woman for the first time in his life — until he discovers she’s hiding a corpse in her refrigerator.
“Girl” is a rare example of a film with broadcaster backing. Demand for HD content as South Korea makes a gradual shift to digital broadcasting has pushed film and TV companies together.
Pic, which had its market premiere at Filmart in Hong Kong, is distributed and sold internationally by CJ Entertainment.
