Nigeria nabs 10 African Awards noms

Nominees include 'Rising Moon,' 'Secret Adventure,' 'Family Battle'

JOHANNESBURG — Nigerian films dominate the nominations for the second African Movie Academy Awards, to be held April 29 in Yenagoa, Nigeria.

Of the 15 films nominated for best feature, 10 are from Nigeria. Nigerian pics also dominate the other categories.

Organizers said they had traveled the continent to market the awards and encourage entries from more nations this year. There had been a marked increase from 2005, but the majority of films submitted were still from Nigeria, with the judges watching 150 Nigerian entries.

The 10 feature nominees from Nigeria are “Rising Moon,” directed by Andy Nwakolor; “Secret Adventure,” Andy Amenechi; “Behind Closed Doors,” Lancelot Imasuen; “Family Battle,” Lancelot Imasuen; “Widow’s Cot,” Dickson Iroegbu; “Anini,” Fred Amata; “Day of Atonement,” Teco Benson; “Eagle’s Bride,” Ikechukwu Onyeka; “To Love a Stranger,” Andy Amenechi; and “Fragile Pain,” Fred Amata.

The other nominees are “My Mother’s Heart,” Ifeanyi Onyeabor (Ghana); “Sofia,” Boubakar Diallo (Burkina-Faso); “Tanyaradzwa,” Tawanda Gunda (Zimbabwe); “Gentle Solution,” Keka Sylvester (Cameroon); and “Arrou,” Segun Oguntola (Gambia).
