Scorsese rolling with the Stones

Par to release helmer's docu on rockers

Paramount will release Martin Scorsese’s documentary on the Rolling Stones, which he began shooting this week.

Movie is financed by Steve Bing’s Shangri-La Entertainment and longtime Stones tour promoter Michael Cohl’s Concert Promotions Intl. Producers are Bing, Cohl, Zane Weiner and Victoria Pearman, while exec producer credits go to Mick Jagger, Keith Richards, Charlie Watts and Ronnie Wood. Jene Rose is co-exec producer.

Hong Kong and Amsterdam-based Fortissimo Films will handle international sales.

The first concert footage shot was Sunday in Gotham in the presence of Bill and Hillary Clinton. The two concerts at the Beacon Theater, part of the “A Bigger Bang” tour, form the heart of the film, which will also include historical and current behind-the-scenes footage. Scorsese is shooting tonight’s show, which was moved back a day to give Mick Jagger’s sore throat a rest.

Scorsese, whose music movies include “The Last Waltz” and Bob Dylan doc “No Direction Home,” is using an elaborate array of equipment. On Sunday, 16 35mm cameras and a Genesis high-def camera were employed under the direction of cinematographer Robert Richardson (“The Aviator”). Further 16mm and 8mm cameras will be used for off-set lensing.

International sales drive got under way early, with Fortissimo taking buyers from Japan, Australia, South Africa and South Korea to the first gig.

The Stones made tickets for Sunday night’s show available to the Clinton Foundation, which fights HIV/AIDS, global warming, childhood obesity and other social ills. Proceeds from the tickets will support the ongoing work of the foundation.
