Par feel ‘Pain’ from Lau, Mark

Poly Bona, Avex Entertainment team on drama

China’s Poly Bona and Japan’s Avex Entertainment have boarded detective drama “Confession of Pain” (formerly “Behind the Sin”) by “Infernal Affairs” helming duo Andrew Lau and Alan Mak.

Deals represent significant minimum guarantees against future distribution revenues. Poly Bona acquires theatrical and video rights, while Avex acquires all Japanese right. Although the $8 million film was fully financed through cash-rich Hong Kong shingle Media Asia, deals also give Poly Bona and Avex modest equity positions in the movie.

“Infernal” and “In the Mood for Love” star Tony Leung Chiu-wai stars as a detective who helps a friend investigate the sudden death of his father. Taiwanese superstar Takeshi Kaneshiro is being lined up to play the younger friend.

Deals are an expansion of Media Asia’s top-level relationships with the aggressive newcomers in both territories.

Media Asia has pre-sold the picture to Hopscotch for Australia, Independenta for Romania and Bliss for Croatia. It previously announced a sale to MK2 for France.
