Jet Li’s last chopsocky does boffo

Pic rings in $2 mil across Southeast Asia

HONG KONG — “Fearless,” billed as the last martial- arts epic starring Jet Li, chopped and kicked its way to a cool $2 million across Southeast Asia on its opening day Thursday.Numbers exceed other pics produced from the same Edko Films stable including “Hero,” “House of Flying Daggers” and “Crouching Tiger Hidden Dragon.”

Pic, helmed by Hong Kong-based Ronny Yu, had its most spectacular bow in mainland China where it grossed 12.5 million yuen ($1.55 million). In Hong Kong it was ka-pow with $158,000 and in Malaysia it sliced out $116,000.

Perf in Taiwan, at $4.28 million, was little short of spectacular given the pro-China content and the minuscule B.O. scored by anything but Hollywood pics these days. Indonesia chipped in with $40,100 and Singapore a further $84,400.

“Fearless” is released by Edko in China and Hong Kong and by Buena Vista Intl. in the rest of Southeast Asia.
