Japan’s Gaga Communications has pre-bought “Journey to the Center of the Earth” and “Mimzy” from New Line Cinema.
The $54 million budget “Mimzy” is a sci-fi tale which sees kids affected by a delivery of toys sent from the future. Pic is now helming under direction of New Line chairman Robert Shaye. It stars Joely Richardson, Timothy Hutton, Michael Clark Duncan, Rhiannon Leigh and Chris O’Neil.
“Journey” is a 3-D adventure movie helmed by effects guru Eric Brevig, making his feature directing debut. It shoots from this month.
“We are very excited by the fast paced live action of ‘Journey’ and will be giving the film a very wide release in 2007,” said a Gaga spokesman. “‘Mimzy’ is perfect for the very large fantasy market in Japan.”
Companies have been regular partners in the past. Gaga recently pre-bought New Line’s “The Golden Compass,” the Chris Weitz-directed “His Dark Materials” adaptation that is skedded for a Stateside release in November 2007. Earlier acquisitions have included “The Notebook” and “Son of the Mask.”
Gaga also grabbed Paris Hilton starrer “National Lampoon’s Pledge This,” which is being sold by Spanish sales agent Latido and Cineville.
