Emperor’s new head

World Brief

Veteran multihyphenate Philip Chan has joined Hong Kong’s Emperor Motion Pictures as head of production.

Former actor, director, producer and music composer, Chan was until three years ago CEO of Mandarin Entertainment. In the intervening period he ran his own outfit, Endless Idea Management, focusing on concert promotion, film development and consulting for mainland Chinese companies.

“What makes EMP such an interesting place to join is that it has now worked out a very good synergy with Beijing and Shanghai that give it better marketing, distribution and sourcing,” Chan said. “Without the China market it is doubtful that it is profitable to invest in Hong Kong movies at all these days.”

Chan and EMP CEO Albert Lee expect to announce deals cementing relations with Shanghai Film Studios and Shanghai Media Group.
