Wedding Crashers

New Line has uncorked a doozy of an unrated "Wedding Crashers" with more raunch but no less bonhomie than the wildly successful original. Far from a thinly disguised marketing ploy, the unrated version is treated as a worthy edition in its own right: Extras are designed around, and clearly address, the differences between the two versions.

New Line has uncorked a doozy of an unrated “Wedding Crashers” with more raunch but no less bonhomie than the wildly successful original. Far from a thinly disguised marketing ploy, the unrated version is treated as a worthy edition in its own right: Extras are designed around, and clearly address, the differences between the two versions. The rapport between stars Owen Wilson and Vince Vaughn shines through regardless of the rating.

The duo supply an amusing — and exceedingly discursive — commentary for both versions, giggling over some of the jokes and adlibs as they go.

“This would be one of the scenes where I would have no idea what Vince was going to say,” Wilson says, as his co-star riffs on maple syrup onscreen. “It certainly wasn’t in the script.”

The two maintain that their ad-libs added freshness to the scenes even if they weren’t ultimately used in the movie.

Helmer David Dobkin, meanwhile, shares filming strategies in his commentary, confiding he “was always trying those two guys together, always making it feel like a heist movie those guys are working on,” he says.

That racy wedding crash montage? Designed like a guitar solo complete with lulls and crescendos.

The disc contains several deleted scenes with optional commentary — a feature more discs should offer. If you’re going to bother to include a cut scene, why not provide context?

The four cut scenes are amusing enough — especially the crashers’ rendition of “99 Red Balloons.” The rest of the scenes that might have gone in that section can be found in the “uncorked” edition. So what are these scenes? Raunchy moments with the grandma character and brother, plus an extended version of the post-coital scene between Vaughn and the Isla Fisher character, to name but a few examples.

They can be funny — and borderline creepy at times — but these scenes don’t add that much to the movie, and in most cases slow it down. No doubt some viewers will lap it up, however.

Also on disc: an amusing featurette on the wedding crashers’ “rules,” wherein Vaughn and Wilson once again crack each other up, plus a segment outlining the planning required to stage the varied nuptials.

Says Wilson: “It’s not complicated: We go to weddings to pick up girls.”
