This elegantly packaged 5-disc set, timed to the Steve Martin remake of Blake Edwards' original "Pink Panther," will be catnip for fans of the devil-may-care feline: Once reduced to a handful of shorts on Pink Panther movie collections, they now have 124 cartoons totaling more than 13 hours to view. Alas extras are as slim as the protagonist.

This elegantly packaged 5-disc set, timed to the Steve Martin remake of Blake Edwards’ original “Pink Panther,” will be catnip for fans of the devil-may-care feline: Once reduced to a handful of shorts on Pink Panther movie collections, they now have 124 cartoons totaling more than 13 hours to view. Alas extras are as slim as the protagonist.

The two main docus are judicious in spreading the credit among helmer Edwards, toon producers Friz Freleng and David H. DePatie, animator Hawley Pratt and composer Henry Mancini — whose incessantly catchy theme song is inseparable from the shorts. Other extras include a short Freleng tribute dominated by his two grown daughters, storyboard comparisons and an all-too-brief lesson in drawing the Pink Panther by animator-director Art Leonardi.
