Weta Digital is jumping from “King Kong” to the King of the World.
The New Zealand-based visual effects house that rose to prominence on Peter Jackson’s “Lord of the Rings” trilogy and “King Kong” remake has been hired by James Cameron to create effects for his upcoming pic “Avatar.”
“Avatar” has not been greenlit by Fox but pic is casting and producer Jon Landau told Daily Variety it is in “very active pre-production.”
Pic is an epic sci-fi love story centered about a paraplegic war veteran who is taken to another planet.
Weta senior vfx supervisor Joe Letteri said ” ‘Avatar’ tells a new kind of story in a world we’ve never seen before. It demands a whole new set of film-making techniques.”
Company has worked previously with Fox on “I, Robot” and “X-Men 3.” This will mark their first collaboration with Cameron.
