BERLIN — More than 150 industryites will be on hand at this year’s Cartoon Masters animation summit, which kicks off Thursday at the Konrad Wolf Film & Television Academy (HFF) in Babelsberg.
Under the banner “The Explosion of Animated Film: Winning Strategies,” the confab will present panel discussions, case studies and workshops targeting creative talent, producers, distribs and buyers.
Cartoon Masters workshops have for the past decade taken place several times a year in different European cities.
In addition to the annual Cartoon Movie animation forum, which takes place at Studio Babelsberg’s fx.Center, Cartoon Masters is one of the main events for Europe’s animation industry.
“In the past 15 years, a remarkable artistic, creative and entrepreneurial industry has emerged in Berlin-Brandenburg,” said Petra Mueller, head of local subsidy board Medienboard Berlin-Brandenburg, which is sponsoring the event.
Animation remains a significant film genre for producers, subsidy boards and local exhibs: Between 1997 and 2004, animated films in Germany generated some E96 million ($121 million) at the box office. Of that sum, $68 million, or 56%, stemmed from pics produced in the Berlin-Brandenburg region.
