TOKYO — Sony Computer Entertainment has announced a shakeup of its top management team, effective Dec. 1.
Kaz Hirai, prexy of Sony Computer Entertainment America, will take over as SCE prexy. Current SCE topper Ken Kutaragi will become chairman, while retaining his title as group CEO. Replacing Hirai as SCEA prexy is Jack Tretton, SCEA executive vice prexy and co-chief operating officer.
Also part of the executive shuffle are Akira Sato, board member, who becomes vice chairman, and David Reeves, prexy of Sony Computer Entertainment Europe, who takes over as SCE deputy prexy, while retaining his current job as head of SCEE.
Since joining SCEA in 1995 and becoming prexy and COO in 1999, Hirai has played an instrumental role in making Play-Station and PlayStation 2 the biggest-selling game platforms in the North American market. In his new position as SCE prexy he will be expected to work the same marketing magic for PlayStation 3, whose roll-out has been marred by production glitches and distribution bottlenecks.
