SingTel aims for high def pay TV

SingTel (Singapore Telecommunications) has started a six-month technical trial of Internet Protocol TV.

SingTel intends to offer high definition pay TV content from partners, including MediaCorp Studios and MegaMedia, via broadband through PC or set-top-box.

Telco also will bid for broadcast rights to English Premier League soccer from August 2007-May 2010.

Sport has long been a driver for pay TV takeup around the world.

SingTel is working with other content partners to provide entertainment services and has applied to the Media Development Authority for a commercial pay TV licence, which will complement its video-on-demand licence.

Pay TV in Singapore is dominated by StarHub Cable Vision, which has 478,000 subscribers.

Broadband penetration is 579,000 residential connections.
